Another notable all European match took place in the finals of the ultra heavyweight division between Eldar Rafigaev and Welshman Jamie Hughes, where Eldar took the victory. The weekend however was dominated by team Atos JJ and two of their stars, Michael Liera Jr took gold in the Lightweight division, beating Scramble athlete Tommi Pulkkannen 2-0, he also went on to secure the open weight division closing out with Lucas Barbosa who closed out his weight class with Luca Anacoreta of Italy. Following their head coach’s performance, team ECJJA had an amazing weekend producing 3 other European champions and multiple medallists. At brown belt ECJJA’s Kingz athlete Ffion Davies put on a dominant performance not only taking double gold in the Gi at the Rome Open , but also winning the open weight in the Euro NoGi, after having no one to fight in her division! ECJJA also had a Male Brown Belt champion in Shane Fishman, who took gold in the brown belt medium heavy adult division. At purple one of the stand out performances of the day came from ECJJA’s Ellis Younger who took Gold in the Adult lightweight division, winning all 5 of his fights by submission. Tarik Hopstock from Frontline Academy also stood out becoming the Nogi European Champion in the Adult brown belt middleweight division, a day after taking Gold in the Rome Open. Repeating his performance in 2017 at purple belt. Another athlete based in Scandinavia also had a dominating weekend, Cemil Karahan of Prana took double Gold in the Rome Open before taking Gold in the European Nogi championships at Purple heavyweight. Cemil submitted most of opponents over the weekend, and in the final of the European NOGI he came up against the tough James Kirkham of MMA Academy Liverpool who had submitted his way to the finals.
