The European Championships have arrived and as always we at Fighters Market have looked at the entries and chosen out Picks to come out of each division as champion !
The lightest division at blackbelt will be decided by a straight final between Mayssa Bastos vs Serena Gabrielli. These two have met previously with Mayssa coming out on top, and we don’t expect a different result here for the ascending black belt.
FME Pick – Mayssa Bastos
At light featherweight we have IBJJF World Champion Ana Talita Alencar looking to add to her medal cabinet with a European Gold Medal, however she faces in stiff opposition in her division with new black belt Anna Rodrigues, a world in 2019 at Brown belt she placed second at the AJP Queen of Mats beating opponents such as Kingz athlete Amal Amjahid and Progress JJ’s Bia Basilio. The next day at the AJP Rio Grand Slam she would take Gold in a staked division beating Alencar in the finals. However the other two athletes are no slouches with Rose-Marie El Sharouni and Naiomi Anaiansi Matthews Martin both being medalists on the majors stage.
FME Pick – Anna Rodrigues
The Featherweight division seems to be one of the stand out divisions with multiple World Champions involved, Progress JJ sponsored athlete Bianca Basilio is a ADCC, Pans, and UAEJJF World Pro champion, but hasn’t got a European title at black belt to her name, in her way will be athletes such as Kingz Athlete Amal Amjahid who is a 2019 IBJJF European Champion and UAEJJF World Pro Champion. Other potential champions include Larissa Campos a brown belt world champion in 2018 who has been on a run recently winning double gold at the IBJJF Paris Open beating Claudia Do Val a heavyweight World champion ! 2018 Brown belt absolute champion Gabriella Fechter will be looking to claim her first European title after coming close the previous year taking silver !
FME Pick – Bianca Basilio
Charlotte Von Baumgarten is back to defend her Lightweight European title in 2020, but she faces stiff opposition in 2019’s featherweight Champion Ffion Davies moving up weight classes to add another European title. Kingz athlete Ffion had an amazing 2019 season, winning the Europeans, Pans and Brasilieros along with medalling at the Worlds and World Pro. While Charlotte is the returning champion, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say Ffion is the favourite. There are however potential spoilers like checkmats Nathalie Riberio a brown belt world champion and UAEJJF LA Grandslam Champion.
FME Pick – Ffion Davies
Another stacked division, some of the main contenders include Thamara Ferreira Silva from team Cicero Costha, a 2019 IBJJF World Champion and a AJP World Pro champion in the mixed brown and black belt division. Another is Alliance’s Renata Marinho, a brown belt IBJJF world champion she placed second at last year’s brasilieros and finally there is newly Promoted Vedha Toscano, who just won the IBJJF World NoGi Championship as a brown belt, a dark horse for the division as she is newly promoted but don’t count her out.
FME Pick – Thamara Ferreira.
A 3 athlete division, we this playing out between 2019 world Gi and Nogi champion Maggie Grindatti, and Sabitha Lais a medallist at the worlds at black belt and a double silver medalist at last years brasilieros.
FME Pick – Maggie Grindatti
Our favourite here is Gracie Barra’s Laura Barker, with titles at brown belt such as the Europeans and Pan Ams, along with a silver at the worlds last year. She’ll face tough opposition in Claire France Thevenon, Magdalena Zofia Loska and Patricia Ramos Caiado Dos Santos.
FME Pick – Laura Barker
Our Final division is Super heavy, on one side we have Gracie Barra’s Jessica flowers and Kendall Reusing who both closed out the Super heavy and Open Class divisions at Nogi Worlds, facing them is Venla Luukkonen a former IBJJF World Champion who’ll be looking to add European title to her name.
FME Pick – GB Close out.
